Photostory

Vinyl has such a pure sound. There is nothing like cracking open the plastic wrap on a new album, opening up the album to see the what's inside, sliding the record out of the sleeve and holding it in your hand and then the moment you set it on the turntable, the excitement takes over. I hope you enjoy my journey through vinyl. It was a fun project to make!

Portraits

Taking portraits are probably the most difficult of all photos to take. I can see the shot I want, but when I get my camera pointed at the subject, that shot is gone. This week posed as a great challenge. Even with doing a research paper on Robert Frank who captured such great photos of people all around the country, I just couldn't get the right photo. In the readings it mentioned portraits don't have to be of people but objects. The two photos below are my attempt at portraits. One was taken at Field Days in Addison County and the other was taken on the way to Basin Harbor.

I call this one "Pops". I was sitting eating at the sausage stand. The gentleman grilling yells over, in his thick NYC accent,  to the main relaxing on a folding chair, "Pops! Can you get some more peppers prepped?" The older man jumped up and eagerly helped. What intrigued me about this man was he was a bit older than the two gentleman grilling. Was Pops the one who started this stand, was it a father to one of the guys grilling, was he just along for the road? These were my thoughts as I quickly grabbed my camera. This ones for you Pops! Thanks for a great dinner.

Driving to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum with summer campers earlier this week I spotted this tree. It jumped at me. There was only the tree behind it and the way the clouds in the sky highlighted it was beautiful. I had to then go back and capture this image. Unfortunately it was in the evening and the sun was beginning to set. I did a few adjustments to nightlight the tree and reduce the brightness.

Text, Clone, and Paint

I went to the text tool and picked out the font, Sharpie. I then typed by text out. There was a tool where you could bend your text. I clicked on that and added the degree of bend and came out with this photo.

Next, we have Mario.
I found a tutorial online on how to clone, which helped tons. Using the clone stamp I clicked at the top of Mario's right leg. Choosing the proper brush size proved to be a bit tricky, it had to fit the length of his leg to get the right image. And here is the finished product. I think that I will be using this tool in my photostory.

I started by selecting the paint tool on the side bar. I then went into the brushes and chose a round fan thin brush at about 66 pixels. I then chose a darker purple color that helped blend with the center of the daylily. I then used the paint tool to fan out the color in the center of the petals. It made a wispy look to the flower.

Photostory
Here is the beginning of my photostory. I'm not sure why my photos are coming out rotated on my blog. Any ideas? There are a few more photos in my file, but those will be a surprise.
Disregard the message above....
I went into Photoshop and rotated them all and re-uploaded them. It was a pain in the butt, but looks much better.

Week 9

DODGE & BURN

I struggled with the assignment regarding Dodge & Burn. I found that by using the tool it only allowed me to do so much with what I had. I only let me lighten the bright parts and not the dark parts. After two hours, I came up with this alteration.
I began with altering the vibrance and saturation of the photo. As I'm typing this out, I wonder if that is why I had such trouble with the adjustments. Hmmm. I then chose the dodge tool, because that is the only one that I could manipulate with. The brush size is used was 88px with a 100% hardness. I then went and highlighted all the sunny spots in the photo.

FILTERS

I love this gorilla! One of the many highlights of heading south on Route 7. I started off my cropping the picture. I then used the Fresco filter to alter the photo to give it an artistic feel. Then I used the brush tool to add red to the VW. Feeling brave, but not confident, I tried the dodge tool to lighten the teeth.

I had fun with this photo! I started off by using the Liquid filter and cascaded the tool to flow with the water. I then sharpened the edges. Next, I went in to Accent the edges I used a edge width of 2, edge brightness of 26 and a edge smoothness of 7. Finally I added the Ocean Ripple filter and adjusted it with a ripple size of 5 and a ripple magnitude of 5.

Color & Lighting

                                                             Color and Lighting

For this weeks assignment I decided to try something a little different with the color and lighting of the skull photo's. The only thing I adjusted in this photo is the skull. I wanted it to pop out. I used the quick selection tool and then adjusted the hue/saturation. I then adjusted the curves with an input of 164 and an output level of 220.

The next photo is adjusted it completely.
I started with the vibrance/saturation of the photo. I then put an emerald green photo filter on it with a 12% density. I then adjust the input levels and then the color balance levels, but only on the shadows. I wanted to highlight the greens without drowning out the shadows of the photos.

Graphic Manipulation

Photo Manipulation in Photoshop

This is such a fun program ! I have experience with this program and it was hard for me to stick to the outline of the assignment. The outline was to use the crop tool, lasso tool and marques tool.
I took it a little further perhaps, once I got manipulating I couldn't stop myself. I am still having trouble with layers.

To start I cropped this photo. (Original is at the bottom) I wanted to make the grass even with the sky to give it equality. I then used the marques tool and highlighted the farm and the mountain, used the free transform tool. I found the free transform by right clicking after I highlighted the subject. I made the farm and mountains larger. I then warped the grass and skewed the grass to give it depth.

I started by cropping this photo. I altered this photo quite a bit. I used the lasso tool to highlight the trees along the middle of the photo and used the vibrance tool to make the tree line brighter. I adjusted them equally- vibrance @ +75 and saturation @ +51.
I then went in and changed the color balance of the entire photograph. The color balance levels are: Shadows: Cyan 0       Green +32          Blue +70
Highlights: Cyan 0     Green +9       Yellow -19

Layers

I played around with layers and adding to the photo. Here is added a posturize layer and adjust the curve settings. I then added some water from the photo above, that I altered. Although it doesn't line up completely I think it adds uniqueness to the photo.

Below are the original photos
